Dr. Opal Lee, the “godmother of Juneteenth,” is now a Barbie!
This week, Mattel released images of the next doll in its Inspiring Women collection. Lee, the activist and teacher who helped make Juneteenth a national holiday, is shown in Barbie form decked out and ready to walk for freedom.
Here’s more about the doll from Mattel:
The Barbie Inspiring Women collection honors extraordinary women from all fields who inspire future generations. Our next addition to the collection is Dr. Opal Lee, a teacher, counselor, and award-winning activist. This legendary leader led the charge to make Juneteenth a national holiday, succeeding in 2021 and earning her the nickname “Grandmother of Juneteenth.” Our doll tribute to this visionary wears a signature look for her annual Opal’s Walk for Freedom, including white joggers, sneakers, and a custom T-shirt.
Nathan Baynard, vice president and head of Barbie at Mattel, said in a statement how proud the company is to welcome Lee into its ongoing doll series.
“As a trailblazing educator, activist, and pivotal leader in the movement for national Juneteenth recognition, Dr. Lee exemplifies the power of purpose in action,” he said, according to License Global. “Her lifelong commitment to community, education, and equity mirrors Barbie’s mission to inspire the next generation to raise their voice, create change, and believe in their limitless potential.”
Lee also said how partnering with Barbie has “been a joy.”
“I hope my story encourages the next generation to never underestimate the power of one voice. As I often say, one person can start a change, and that can change the world.”
The doll is currently available for pre-order at Mattel Creations, and will ship on or before Feb. 6.
