Leslie Jones seems to get hit with featurism and colorism insults quite a bit online. I’m sure she’s weathered that kind of stuff in person as well throughout her life. But her features are just the reason she deserves to be at the center of a rom-com.
Black women are rarely cast in these kinds of films to begin with, but Black women who don’t fit a Eurocentric mold are cast even less, if at all, to headline a rom-com. Of course, Jones is naturally talented and funny, and she doesn’t need to be saddled with representing everyone just because she’s taking on a fun, light role. But, with someone like Jones as a lead, it could help a lot of young girls who see themselves in her to know that they are beautiful and likeable as they are.
